Job Description

The Greenville City Fire Department (GCFD) is an All-Hazards department providing fire protection, 
technical rescue and emergency medical services. Our firefighters are dedicated to protecting and serving the community with courage, commitment and care.

Firefighter Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for a firefighter position at GCFD, you must meet the following criteria:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • U.S. citizen
  • 18 years or older
  • EMT-Basic or higher certification (or obtained within the first year of employment)
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license (or able to obtain one)
  • Pass pre-employment background checks (Criminal, Motor Vehicle, and Education Verification)
  • Pass pre-employment health screenings (drug, vision/hearing, psychological, stress and pulmonary function)

Hiring Process

GCFD typically hosts open hiring periods for firefighters throughout the year. During these times, candidates can apply online. You may need to provide the following documents:

  • IFSAC or Pro Board Certification in Firefighter I & II
  • Current National Registry EMT Certification
  • Military Form DD-214 (long form) Discharge Certificate
  • Current Driver’s License

After applications are reviewed and approved, candidates take an online exam. Candidates with a passing score are invited to take the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT). If you pass the CPAT, you’ll be interviewed by GCFD staff. Successful candidates will be added to our eligibility list and contacted accordingly.

Benefits and Compensation 

Salaries are based on a 53-hour work week. Firefighters are divided into three shifts: 24 hours on and 48 hours off. All other staff typically work Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. See our most updated pay structure here.

Personal appearance

All City employees shall observe proper grooming and personal hygiene and comply with the following standards. This list is not all-inclusive and the department head or his/her designee in consultation with the Chief Human Resources Officer will have the final determination as to the appropriateness of any tattoos, brands and body modifications.

  1. Hair Length and Facial Hair. Hair length and facial hair are an employee's personal preference. Hair shall be kept clean and combed to maintain a professional appearance. The length of hair must not pose a safety hazard for employees working around machinery and moving objects. Facial hair is forbidden if it will interfere with personal protective equipment. Beards and mustaches must be neatly groomed, otherwise employees are expected to report to work clean-shaven.
  2. Limitations Regarding the Display of Tattoos. The following limitations regarding the display of tattoos while representing the department will be followed:
    1. The display of any offensive or obscene image, phrase or other expression contained within a visible tattoo shall be prohibited. Offensive images, phrases or other expressions shall include but not limited to:
      1. Words, symbols, or depictions that exhibit or advocate discrimination against age, sex, race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability or other protected classifications under federal, state or local.
      2. Depictions of nudity, violence or criminal activity, or symbols/words suggesting the person condones, encourages or participates in violence or criminal activity.
      3. Sexually explicit/vulgar art, words, or profane language.
      4. Any images or words that bring discredit upon the City and department or that are reasonably deemed offensive or inciting under accepted exceptions to free speech rights in an employment context.
    2. Tattoos are not permitted to be displayed on the face or front of the neck. "Front of the neck" as used herein means the area in front of a vertical line at the opening of the ear orifice around the front to a vertical line at the opening of the other ear orifice and between the collar line of a crew neck shirt and base of the jawbone.
  3. Visible Intentional Body Modification is Prohibited. Absent a reasonable accommodation, visible (i.e., cannot be concealed by clothing, such as head, neck, below the wrist) intentional body modification includes, but is not limited to, branding, scarring and foreign objects inserted under the skin, dermal piercing, tongue piercings or modifications; and/or stretched out holes in ears (gauges). It also includes any type of piercing jewelry that can be easily grabbed and caught on foreign objects or otherwise present a safety issue or is distracting.
  4. Tattoos/Visible Modifications Related to Candidates for Employment. All applicants for employment will be advised of this policy and be required to self-disclose any tattoos/body modifications in violation of this policy. Generally, any applicant in violation of this policy will be disqualified unless they can demonstrate the ability to comply with or receive an accommodation related to a requirement of, this policy. Candidates for employment will be screened by those administering testing procedures during the hiring process to verify compliance. At this time, a determination will be made as to whether an applicant violates this policy.
