Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
The primary purpose of this position is to provide Advanced Life Support Level and Basic Life Support Level emergency medical treatment & transport to the sick and injured. The goal of this position is to perform high quality assessments of the sick and injured, to determine most appropriate course of medical treatment based upon that assessment, to provide the determined course of treatment to the sick and injured in the most efficient, beneficial, and professional manner while on-scene or during ambulance transport to a receiving medical facility. This position is "call-time" meaning this position will work on a PRN / As-Needed basis and is not eligible for benefits offered to Full-Time employees.

MAJOR PREFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Maintain all medical response equipment, supplies, and medication at a high state of readiness at all times. 
  2. Respond safely and appropriately to emergency scenes when requested.
  3. Initiate, complete, and re-assess scene size up for initial and on-going hazards.
  4. Perform appripriate patient assessments as determined by the patient's chief complaint and type of emergency scene.
  5. Appropriately interpret patient assessment findings to determine course of treatment / intervention.
  6. Provide assessment-based treatment(s) / intervention(s) to improve patient condition(s) and to reduce mortality / morbidity. 
  7. Determine most appropriate transport destination and safely initiate patient transport. 
  8. Maintain continuity of appropriate treatment / intervention throughout duration of transport.
  9. Provide pre-arrival patient status and patient care report via on-board radio to receiving hospital.
  10. Provide a patient hand-off report to nursing staff / physician(s) accepting or assuming patient care, to include all known patient information, treatments / interventions provided during transport, patient's response to treatments / interventions during transport, and all / any known patient medical history.
  11. Decontaminate all equipment and assigned vehicle components, re-stock all used medical supplies, and assure that the assigned reponse vehicle is restored to the highest state of readiness.
  12. Complete a detailed, accurate, and full patient care report for each patient encounter prior to the end of your assigned duty period during which the patient encounter occured.
  13. Regularly attend and actively participate in continuting / educational in-service training.
  14. Regularly attend and actively participate in Quality Assurance Sessions as directed.
  15. Maintain a professional demeanor and professional appearance during all assigned duty periods.
  16. Actively participate in daily activites including the performance of station duties, terriroty familiarization, personnel training, and professional development.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Possess and demonstrate the abi l ity t o app ly an I n-depth k now l edge of Bas i c Life Support and Advanced Life Support emergency medical treatment in the performance of prov i ding emergency response upon request. Possess the know l edge and demonstrate the abili t y to apply advanced airway management skills to appropr i ately manage the airway. Possess and demonstrate the ab i l i ty to apply an in-depth k nowledge of pharmacology relat i ng to pre-hospita l emergency medicine . Possess and app ly the organizat i onal ski ll s sufficient to successfu lly manage an emergenc y scene i n such a manner to reduce morta l ity I morbidity . Possess the knowledge of and demonstrate appropriate app l icat i on of t he most currently appro v ed and / or accepted department pat i ent care protocols . Possess the knowledge of and demonstrate the appropriate application of the State of Florida Admin i strat iv e Code 64- J or the most c u r r ent State of Flor i da Administrative Code relating to Emergency Med i cal Serv i ces .

WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
This position may require serious ph y sical exertion and/or muscular strain and the expected, dail y ph y sical activity associated with this position includes frequently reaching, turning, twisting, pulling , pushing, stepping, squatting, kneeling and routine periods of standing for extended lengths of time. This position involves exposure to extreme heat and cold, rain, noise, strong odors, dust, pollen and possible to xic or caustic conditions on an extending and routine basis. Per sons wishing to fill this position must be able tO work at a desk for prolonged perio d s, in a moving vehicl e, and to s t and for prolonged periods.
The person filling this position may regularl y e ndure extended peri ods with little or no slee p. Direct Lifting and / or Use of Dir ect Force:
  • 20% Light Work - Up to 10lbs of direct lifting and/or use of direct force.
  • 30% Medium Work - Up to 50lbs of direct lifting and/or use of direct force
  • 50% Heavy Work - Up to 100lbs of direct lifting and/or use of direct force
POSITION WITHIN ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE
This position reports directly to the Shift Lieutenant or designated Officer in Charge (OIC).

MINIMUM QUALIFIACTIONS
Must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid FL Dirver's License. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and FDLE background check. Must have excellent communication skills and data entry/computer proficiency. Must have current 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC). Must have the following qualifications:
Paramedic:
  • Current and Active State of Florida Paramedic Certification
  • Current ACLS Certification
EMT:
  • Current and Active State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification
  • Current BLS Certification
