We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Project Accountant to oversee the full lifecycle of project accounting activities, from initial setup through closeout, across multiple ongoing projects. This role is instrumental in ensuring accurate billing, cost tracking, and financial reporting in collaboration with project teams and leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage the complete project accounting process for multiple, concurrent projects
Serve as a subject matter expert on billing structures across various contract types (e.g., Time & Materials, Fixed Fee, Cost Plus)
Monitor and analyze project costs, revenues, and overall profitability
Prepare Work in Progress (WIP) schedules and associated revenue recognition journal entries
Review and process project-related expenditures, ensuring accurate cost allocation
Execute project adjustments as requested by Project Directors or Managers
Partner with Project Managers to maintain and update project budgets and financial forecasts
Analyze project variance reports and resolve financial discrepancies
Assist with monthly close activities specific to project accounting
Generate client-facing financial reports and prepare accurate and timely invoices
Monitor cash flow for assigned projects and support collection efforts
Maintain and update project fee schedules and rate tables
Support external and internal audit activities by preparing necessary documentation
Develop, document, and improve project accounting procedures and controls
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
3–5 years of experience in project accounting, preferably within engineering, architecture, or professional services environments
Familiarity with the AEC industry is a plus
Proficiency in project-based ERP and accounting systems (experience with BST is preferred)
Strong understanding of project cost accounting, billing practices, and revenue recognition
Solid grasp of GAAP and contract compliance standards
Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel
CPA certification or active progress toward CPA designation is preferred
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interface across all levels of an organization
Excellent collaboration skills and experience partnering with technical and non-financial staff
Ability to communicate complex financial data in a clear and concise manner
High level of attention to detail, organizational skills, and a proactive problem-solving approach
Demonstrates professionalism and a customer service mindset
Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
Capable of managing multiple priorities and meeting critical deadlines in a dynamic environment
