K–8 Reading Specialist

About Mystic Valley Regional Charter School (MVRCS):

Students in grades K–12 follow a dress code and attend school for 200 days per year. Our school day is 60 minutes longer than most traditional public schools, allowing us to provide a world-class education with extended learning time.

Job Description:
Reporting to the K–8 Assistant Directors and guided by the Board of Trustees’ policies, the Reading Specialist leads Mystic Valley’s Reading Intervention program. This role focuses primarily on students in Grades K–6, with potential support up to Grade 8. The Reading Specialist works to identify and remediate reading and language challenges for at-risk or below-grade-level students through data-driven strategies and targeted curriculum support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary liaison for parents of at-risk students in reading and language acquisition, facilitating enrollment and ongoing communication.

  • Collaborate closely with fellow Reading Specialists and classroom teachers to ensure curriculum alignment and consistency.

  • Deliver reading interventions using Direct Instruction methodology, maintaining strict fidelity to approved programs.

  • Avoid the introduction or development of curricula that do not align with Direct Instruction or Core Knowledge frameworks.

  • Provide targeted instruction to at-risk students according to the established teaching schedule.

  • Adapt to new student needs by incorporating additional at-risk learners throughout the school year.

  • Prepare and distribute quarterly progress reports accompanying report cards for students receiving reading support.

  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences to discuss student progress and strategies.

  • Perform supplemental duties as assigned by the Assistant Director to support overall school operations.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred: Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a specialization in reading or related field required.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Proficient in report writing and clear correspondence.

  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate data, define problems, and recommend solutions.

  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with students, families, staff, and community members.

  • Knowledge of applicable school policies, state and federal laws, and MVRCS procedures.

  • Experience assessing student skills and interpreting findings through written reports.

  • Demonstrated collaboration, teaching, coaching, and leadership abilities to enhance student programming within a team environment.

  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently.

  • Deep knowledge of specialized content and relevant educational laws and procedures.

  • Ability to plan and implement lessons aligned with district and school goals tailored to student needs.

  • Successful completion of required MTEL tests within one year of employment.

This is an annual appointment subject to yearly evaluation.
