Summary:
The Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for working collaboratively with members of the Surgery Department staff in order to assist the surgeons in the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients. In addition, the PA cares for a wide range of medical complications, some of which require immediate medical attention that are often serious and may be life threatening.
Responsibilities:
• Works collaboratively with the Surgery department and physicians to prioritize the surgical schedule, write orders, obtain consents and participate in quality initiatives.
• Recognizes conditions in patients and communicates information to supervising physicians in a timely manner.
• Completes rounding on patients and assists the Emergency Room on consults.
• Orders and interprets clinically appropriate tests.
• Performs procedures within the scope of practice and expertise as defined by the delineation of privileges.
• Coordinates outpatient referral and follow-up care plans for patients discharged.
• Communicates diagnosis-specific education to patients and families/guardians.
• Coordinates inter-facility transfers for patients in need of inpatient services.
• Uses an electronic medical record (EMR) to document patient encounters, places orders for patient care, and views results.
• Practices medicine in an ethical manner consistent with contemporary, evidence-based practice guidelines.
• Participates in medical staff, department, and hospital affairs as applicable.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience: Previous experience as a licensed Physician Assistant required.
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree from an AMA accredited physician assistant program.
Licenses / Certifications: Valid New York State license to practice medicine. Unrestricted DEA number. Certification from the National Commission for Certified Physician's Assistants (NCCPA). Maintains current certifications in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BLS/ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), plus any other certifications required by the attending physician or Medical Staff Office.
